Rosita
Ho Scholarships
The Rosita Ho Scholarship is a four-year undergraduate award
for non-US resident students of Chinese descent who plan to
study in the United States on student visas from China, Hong
Kong, or Taiwan or elsewhere outside of the United States. The
scholarship is available to high school graduates who have
applied and been accepted to the University of California,
Berkeley as entering freshman. Students who are entering the
University of California, Berkeley as junior-year transfers may
also be considered, however preference will be given to freshman
applicants.
For the freshman year, The Rosita Ho Scholarship provides
funds for university fees, non-residency tuition, room and
board, living expenses, books and supplies, and summer expenses.
For the sophomore, junior and senior year, the scholarship will
cover room and board, and tuition and fees. It is the
Foundation’s expectation that the Rosita Ho scholarship
students will work part-time after their freshman year to cover
living expenses. The Rosita Ho Scholarship will be renewed
yearly for a maximum of four years provided students maintain at
least a 3.0 cumulative UC grade point average and complete a
minimum of 30 units per year. Financial need, not area of study,
is the chief award criterion. Awards for junior-year transfers
will be a maximum of two-years.
The objective of the Rosita Ho Foundation is to help students
of Chinese origin, who do not have sufficient funds to attend
college in the United States. By making it possible for students
to obtain university degrees, the Foundation hopes that student
lives will be changed and that these young people will achieve
personal goals and objectives that would not possible without
such an education in the United States. The Foundation, in
providing scholarships to needy Chinese students, also wishes to
contribute to better cross-cultural understanding between
Chinese and Americans.
The Rosita Ho Foundation was established on October 12, 1999
in Hong Kong in memory of Rosita Ho by her husband K.K. Ho. Mrs.
Ho was born in Shanghai in 1929. She married K. K. Ho in 1947
and they moved to Hong Kong, where she lived from 1949 to 1999.
Rosita Ho will be remembered for her generosity and dedication
to her husband and her family. The Rosita Ho Foundation is
intended to preserve the memory of a loving wife, a caring
mother, and a wonderful friend.
